Statement from Lady Diana Mukpo on the Publication of the Tibetan version of Dragon Thunder
I am both delighted and humbled that Dragon Thunder: My Life with Chögyam Trungpa is being published in Tibetan. What an impressive project the 108 Translations is! And how wonderful it is that this book and other works of Western literature are being made available to the Tibetan people!
Chögyam Trungpa was a remarkable teacher. Dragon Thunder gives a glimpse into Trungpa Rinpoche’s life and teachings in the West. The precious teachings that he brought out of Tibet transformed the life of so many Westerners and still continues to do so to this day. I am sure his work will have an impact on many generations to come. While we in the West had the good fortune to have Rinpoche with us, at the same time, the people at Surmang did not have him in their midst. This made life even more difficult for them, during an era that was very bleak for them.
At one point, when Rinpoche was supplicated to visit Surmang, he contemplated whether or not he could go there in a helicopter, since he was partially paralyzed from an accident. I know that he would have loved to return for one last visit. When I was able to travel to Surmang in 2002, I felt that in some small way, I was fulfilling his wishes.
I am so appreciative that my book is now available to share with the Tibetan people. I wrote it in the hopes that it would inspire and inform people about his remarkable life and accomplishments. I hope this will be the case for many Tibetans!
In an interview many years ago conducted by Kesang Getza Tashi, Rinpoche was asked if he had any advice for the Tibetan people in India. I would like to share Trungpa Rinpoche’s message to his fellow Tibetans. He said:
I think the main thing for the Tibetan people, as I see it, is for each Tibetan to have a sense of pride and appreciation of their being Tibetan. We Tibetans were brought up with this pride. We don’t have to start from scratch, like many Western students had to. There is already a cultural education that exists and which we share as Tibetans. I wish that people would take more interest in this. On the other hand, people can have some practice of dharma, definitely. Finally, less fascination with the Western world would be helpful. I think younger people should try more, and the older people also must not give up. That seems to be the natural thing.

May this project help to preserve and enliven the Tibetan language, which is a great sacred and secular treasure in this world.
